"Give Me Liberty Or Give Me A U-Haul"
The Lexington Herald-Leader wants to amend the state constitution to automatically restore voting rights to convicted felons. The bill stands no chance of passage, which is probably a good thing since we hardly need to expand the base of voters electing themselves bigger entitlements from taxpayers.
In fact, encouraging people to get with the program or get out of the state could become a theme in this General Assembly if we were to encourage suddenly civic-minded felons to find another state that wants their problems and their votes, along with sending illegal aliens and drug-abusing welfare recipients packing.

I used to be amazed at the Heraldo-Liberal positions, but not anymore. Leftists to the core!
Considering how many felons are indoctrinated into the religion of the false god allah while in prison, we definitely don't want this.
God knows, you don't want anybody voting who might disagree with you... it's too... representative.
It's too representative of the redistributive tendencies Kentucky is so ill-equiped to afford. Let them move to wealthier states who can afford them.
now that's an insular concept! dump everybody you don't approve of in another state.
These are the kind of decisions we are headed toward because of the decades of overspending in order to make everyone feel good.
We can start moving in this direction or wait until there is no choice but to raise taxes so high no one with a choice will bother staying. Try getting your projects funded then.
dichotomous thinking is a pretty weak tool when applied solving complex social and political problems
you display a real intellect and sometimes your blog displays so much promise, I'm surprised you rely on it so often
it seriously limits your potential
Fine with me, but only if in the process we dump everyone who claims to be a "religious conservative" or those who want to cram religion down our throats in that grand holy land of Iraq!
Dichotomous thinking? Psychology has little to do with this. I'm talking about actuarial science.
are you're saying you don't consider people in your political policy ideas?
No.
Giving people back the right to vote who have shown that they can not obey some of the more basic laws and responsibilities is just wrong.
If felons wanted to vote, they should not have become felons. I know that this is cold statement and I dont care.
Voting is a responsible choice and felons have proven that they can not make the correct choice.
It is real simple, to vote, dont commit a felony and you can keep your right to vote.
so you don't believe anybody should ever be given a second chance?
the problem may be fiscal but your solution is heartless.
I think you have a very broad definition of "second chance."
how so?
First, I never said or even implied that no one "should every be given a second chance." I have a hard time carrying on a conversation with someone who misquotes me or mischaracterizes what I say and then argues with the misquote or mischaracterization. And there are ways to give someone a "second chance" that don't involve automatically restoring voting rights. You don't need voting rights to take job training or receive temporary assistance. A convicted felon who is still unhappy because he has to apply to get his voting rights back is free to move on, that's all.
Excellent retort at 5:58 KP! Excellent!
"If felons wanted to vote, they should not have become felons."
Excellent as well! Right in there with "If you can't afford to do the time, don't do the crime." Part of "the time" is losing voting rights, gun ownership, etc.
Well said at 1:42 as well KP. Once they prove themselves, say ten or fifteen years, maybe then they can "apply" for the restoration of voting rights.
By the way 10:40, not wanting muslims voting has nothing to do with a disagreement. Try to think a little deeper.
We are at war with a bunch of false god worshiping morons who believe that their alleged "holy book" written by a warrior, thief, polygamist, and child molester tells them to murder innocent people who don't think as they do. They can't even see that they are stuck living in 7th century conditions because of that evil book. Look at islmaic nations the world over and prove me wrong.
They have overtly declared war against Western Civilization, specifically the United States.
They covertly, through leftist immigration policies brought to us by the mental disorder of liberalism and its associated political correctness, infiltrate our society and try to change it for them.
They are not assimilating here. In fact they are even converting some of our weaker more leftist indoctrinated countrymen to take up arms against us as well.
No voting rights for convicted felons.
WAKE UP!
"if we were to encourage suddenly civic-minded felons to find another state that wants their problems and their votes, along with sending illegal aliens and drug-abusing welfare recipients packing."
"If felons wanted to vote, they should not have become felons. I know that this is cold statement and I dont care."
what misquote? the bill excludes automatic reinstatement for more serious criminals in any case. you referred to "felons" without qualifying degrees or types.
it's not worth discussing with you really. I was interested in how your mind works. I'm a little disappointed. sorry I mentioned it. you'll surely figure it all out in fullness of time all by yourself.
A felon is a felon is a felon. When I was growing up, I certainly made my share of mistakes. They just were no to the level that ever got me arrested.
There was no way that my parents were going to go running to the judge and cut a deal to get "their little Johnny out of trouble", they were going to leave me to the mess that I got myself into.
It is time for those that got the criminal record to face the facts that they are the reason for their record. Not anyone else. Part of the consequences of the record is the loss of the right to vote. This is a nation of laws "supposedly" and they need to be enforced not manipulated to benefit a few.
The benefits of voting were taught in civics class when I was in school, also taught was what happens when you are convicted of certain crimes.
I am a 23 year old Kentuckian with a 5 year old felony. The events leading to my conviction were not my fault, and I did not have previous knowledge of the event. I was guilty by association and am paying for a crime I truly did not commit. I was 18 years old at the time. I am now an Honors student at a public KY university who just received my voing rights back. This state has caused nothing but pain since my conviction, and if I could affod to leave it, I would but unfortunately, another side effect of being a felon in KY and never getting the second chance you may deserve, is that it is nearly immpossible to find employment. If I recall correctly, this nation was founded on equality, not judgement. Equal Opportunity only applies if you have never made a mistake in your life, (or gotten caught). What people fail to realize is that all felons are not created equal. A child rapist is not and should not be placed in the same catagory as someone who buys stolen property. When those catagories can be sorted out, perhaps then some could automatically have voting right restored instead of waiting 6 months like I did to receive a partial pardon after voter registration dates were closed.
